Sorting Through the Clutter
If you somehow were able to unearth my diary amidst the clutter of my room, then you would probably find something like this...

I am deathly afraid of driving in the snow. Why do I say that? Because I am afraid of death when maneuvering my vehicle through slushy, snowy, icy Canadian winter. And also because I've battled this Canadian weather, wielding my car as my weapon, and got my ass kicked. This was almost two years ago and the scars (the emotional ones) still remain.

I stumbled across an article on winter driving and found that a skid control school exists in Oakville. So after shelling over some major dough and waiting in line for a month (they are so popular that they are pretty much fully booked until next winter) I went to the full day driving course today.

It consists of three students and a funny old man as an instructor in a "bastardized" car, skidding around on a man-made ice pad. The car has been manipulated in every way possible to simulate the worse driving in the worse winter conditions.

The first time the instructor took us for a controlled skid on the ice, I freaked out. So he continued to take us out on run after run until I stopped screaming in the back seat. And then it was time for me to take the wheel. My hands gripped the wheel so hard that I probably would've ripped it right off the car. I careened down the slicked down track at 50 KPH and twisted the wheel. The car swung around and came to a halt 270-degrees later. I had half expected the car to slam into some guardrail as I squeezed my eyes shut in the midst of the spinning madness. But I was safe.

By the end of the day, I was able to control a full-on skid with ease. These instructors are miracle workers, I tell yas. I can't say I'm fully rehabilitated. But I don't think I'm going to feel like I'm on the verge of a heart attack the next time I'm driving in snowy, slushy weather.
