Sorting Through the Clutter
If you somehow were able to unearth my diary amidst the clutter of my room, then you would probably find something like this...

The Story of Balance.

Flashback to May 2002.
God: Jenn, I think you should lead a small group at CCF this year.
Me: Um, I don't think so. I'm burnt out. I need a breather. I need to step back from CCF for a bit.

Fastforward to May 2003.
God: Jenn, I think you should lead a small group at CCF this year.
Me: Ok. I think I'm ready this time. I want to do this.

So began the evolution of the small group Balance. AC and I shot emails back and forth all summer long, trying to decide on a direction, on a theme, on a focus for small groups this year. We were simply excited about the prospect of leading one. (Note: For those who don't know, small group is a subgroup of Hamilton Chinese Christian Fellowship - HCCF. CCF has become quite huge over the past few years. Small groups allow the members to meet once a week on a more personal and intimate level).

We knew we wanted an unofficial focus on the first-years. I remember how important small group was to me in first year. It gave me my first initial sense of belonging at CCF. And then the flash of inspiration hit me! What do first-years need the most? BALANCE! Balancing the schoolwork, social life, health, sports, spiritual life was what first year was all about. And so we decided that Balance would be the name.

Me: God, will I have time? Will people want to join? Will people want to come? Will it burn me out? Is it going to work?
God: Just trust.

And then people started signing up. People came out regularly on Monday nights. I wanted to make time for this. I looked forward to each Monday night. Not only did it not burn me out, Balance gave me energy and sense of focus. Balance worked in ways I never imagined. It exceeded my expectations of what leading a small group would be like. Each and every member of Balance will hold a special place in my heart. They all taught me so much...thanks for making my last year at McMaster so great. Who would've thought I would leave school with so many more new memories?
